Afraid your voice will crack on stage? The real problem

By Nirel Argov · · For singers · 4 min read

A little more, another climb, another run...
Give it more, you can do it...

And bang.
It happened.
His voice betrayed him.

Every singer carries the fear of the moment on stage when they'll be found out. When everyone will hear that they can't reach the strong, high notes.

And it's not that he's going for notes he can't sing. These are notes he knows well. But suddenly, on stage, the performance has to be sharper and more precise.

The real problem isn't the crack

So what is the real problem?

That even when he steers clear of those notes,
and even when he knows how to play it safe,
the fear that his voice will betray him follows him through the entire show.

Think about it: what happens to a person gripped by fear?
He shuts down. He holds back. He overthinks. He isn't free.
He doesn't have the lightness he has when he sings at the Shabbat table with friends.

And that's where the problem lies.

The fear that follows a singer while he sings ruins his career. Plain and simple.

All it takes is that small voice in your head saying, "Careful, don't do that run, it's too risky."
And you're no longer singing freely.

Why voices crack on high notes

A crack is not random. Most of the time it comes from one of three things:

Pushing the chest voice too high

Many singers drag their heavy, speaking-like voice upward until it can't hold, and it flips. The fix is learning to balance chest voice and head voice, so the change between them is smooth.

Reaching up with the neck

Lifting the chin and stretching toward a high note tightens exactly the muscles that need to stay free.

Not enough air under the sound

A huge gasp of air into the chest feels like preparation, but it locks the throat. Steady air from low down is what carries a high note.

Confidence comes from technique

To get out of the fear that your voice will betray you, you need solid confidence that you can sing a song in your key, add your runs, and give it your own interpretation without holding back.

And there's no real way to get that confidence if you don't know how to use your vocal cords.

It's exactly like a musical instrument. The more technique you have on an instrument, the more of an artist you become.

Many singers start singing because they have a beautiful voice. But holding a ninety-minute show, reaching high notes and performing complex songs takes skill. And skill comes from training the voice.

Three minutes before your next show

The fear gets quieter when your body knows what to do. Before you walk on stage:

  • Take five slow, low breaths, letting the belly move out and the shoulders stay still.
  • Slide gently up and down on a lip trill, right through the area where your voice usually flips.
  • Sing the hardest line of your first song once, softly, at half volume.

This doesn't replace technique. It reminds your voice of the coordination you've built, so the first high note of the night isn't a surprise.

Where to start

In my online course, Rediscover Your Voice, I teach exactly how to get there: how to build confidence in your singing, and how to step on stage knowing you can deliver every song without the fear that your voice will let you down.

Common questions

Why does my voice crack on high notes?

Usually because the heavy chest voice is pushed too high, the neck takes over, or the air under the sound isn't steady. All three are technique, and all three can be trained.

How do I stop being afraid of high notes?

Build the coordination first, in practice, at a soft volume. Confidence on stage comes from knowing your voice will respond the same way every time.

Is it bad for my voice when it cracks?

A single crack is not an injury. But cracks that come with strain, pain or hoarseness are a sign to change how you sing, and if hoarseness lasts more than two weeks, to see an ENT doctor.
